Auxin Transport in Zea mays L. Coleoptiles I. Influence of Gravity on the Transport of Indoleacetic Acid-2-C.

چکیده
(14)C-methylene labeled IAA was used to determine the influence of reorientation with respect to gravity on auxin transport in Zea mays L. coleoptile segments. It was observed that inversion of the segments leads to a decrease in the capacity to transport (14)C-IAA basipetally, as well as, in certain instances, the linear velocity of that transport. Segments were also reoriented horizontally, and the transport velocity and capacity of the upper and lower tissue halves compared with vertical halves. There was no significant change in the velocity, but the transport capacity of lower halves was higher than that of the vertical halves, which in turn was higher than the capacity of the horizontal upper halves. It is suggested that the geocurvature of horizontally placed coleoptiles may be caused primarily by the effect of reorientation on auxin transport.

Auxin Transport in Zea mays Coleoptiles II. Influence of Light on the Transport of Indoleacetic Acid-2-C.
The effect of bilateral irradiation with white light (1000 Meter Candle Sec) on the basipetal transport of auxin has been investigated. Illumination of either the intact shoot or the excised coleoptile tip of the Zea seedling, decreased the amount of diffusible auxin obtained from the tip, and decreased Avena curvature response to unilaterally applied indoleacetic acid. Irradiation of the intac...
متن کاملCan lateral redistribution of auxin account for phototropism of maize coleoptiles?
Elongation growth of intact, red-light grown maize (Zea mays L.) coleoptiles was studied by applying a small spot of an indole acetic acid (IAA)-lanolin mixture to the coleoptile tip. We report that: (a) endogenous auxin is limiting for growth, (b) an approximately linear relation holds between auxin concentration and growth rate over a range which spans those rates occurring in phototropism, a...
متن کاملRhythmic Differences in the Basipetal Movement of Indoleacetic Acid between Separated Upper and Lower Halves of Geotropically Stimulated Corn Coleoptiles.
Rhythmic fluctuation in the basipetal movement of auxin occurs in corn (Zea mays) coleoptiles oriented either in the vertical or in the horizontal position. This periodicity of transport rate varies from region to region in a horizontal coleoptile. Between an upper and lower half coleoptile (with respect to gravity), the comparable regions in the coleoptile do not exhibit similar periods. The v...
متن کاملTransport of indoleacetic Acid in intact corn coleoptiles.
We have characterized the transport of [(3)H]indoleacetic acid (IAA) in intact corn (Zea mays L.) coleoptiles. We have used a wide range of concentrations of added IAA (28 femtomoles to 100 picomoles taken up over 60 minutes). The shape of the transport curve varies with the concentration of added IAA, although the rate of movement of the observed front of tracer is invariant with concentration...
متن کاملNPH3- and PGP-like genes are exclusively expressed in the apical tip region essential for blue-light perception and lateral auxin transport in maize coleoptiles
Phototropic curvature results from differential growth on two sides of the elongating shoot, which is explained by asymmetrical indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) distribution. Using 2 cm maize coleoptile segments, 1st positive phototropic curvature was confirmed here after 8 s irradiation with unilateral blue light (0.33 μmol m(-2) s(-1)). IAA was redistributed asymmetrically by approximately 20 min a...
